Simon HatchI didn't really have a great time at school. It's not that I was stupid, but I had no motivation and just didn't want to be there. I left with no qualifications, so I was nervous about returning to education as an adult. I worked as a builder for 20 years, so taking the Access to HE course is very different, but I was ready for a change.
The Access to HE course is nothing like school. The tutors are very supportive, and I think they recognise how life-changing the Access to HE qualification can be. Life skills, experiences and personal stories are all valued on the Access to HE course, as well as the main study curriculum which I have found very interesting and challenging.
Study skills are an important part of the Access to HE course. This has helped me understand what I'll need when I get to university. School leavers don't get this head start. I really feel that the success I had at my university interviews was down to what I've learnt during my Access to HE course.
In September I will begin my degree course in Social Work at the University of Gloucestershire. It's a vocational course, so I'll be qualified when I graduate. I'm looking forward to it, but I'll miss my Access to HE class. I've made some good friends and I'll treasure this experience in years to come.
