2011: Access to HE Diploma (Psychology), Doncaster College

Over 10 years ago I was registered blind, due to a degenerative eye disorder, but this hasn’t stopped me from pursuing my passions in life, including education.

Until 2009 I was working in the IT industry as a project manager, but after being made redundant I decided to make a few changes in my life.

This seemed the perfect time to pursue my ambition of gaining a BSc degree in Psychology. I spoke to my local college about the best way to do this and they suggested studying for an Access to HE Diploma. This would enable me to apply to university.

I joined the course the same year and really enjoyed my time at college, managing to successfully overcome the accessibility challenges I faced along the way. I was pleased that the format of the Access course allowed me to combine my studies with my duties as a father (my son was born during my first week at college!) and my passion to become an ultramarathon runner.

I particularly enjoyed studying psychology and look forward to continuing at degree level. I was very happy to complete the course successfully and feel that Access to HE has put me in a great position to take my education to the next step.
