Access to HE gets its own award

Access to Higher Education is a UK success story, and the search is now on for Access providers and support agencies that can demonstrate outstanding achievement.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has launched the Access to HE Awards Scheme to recognise the vital contributions of colleges, universities and Access Validating Agencies in the progression of Access students.

Students who have already been honoured by their AVA for achieving particular success will also be recognised at the awards ceremony.

QAA’s Head of Access Kath Dentith said: ‘This is an excellent opportunity to recognise the exceptional work undertaken by so many further and higher education institutions in helping students back into the education system and to widen participation in higher education.

‘It is also a great way to celebrate the achievements of the students who come from a hugely diverse range of backgrounds and who often have to work so hard and juggle so much to complete their Access to HE courses.

‘We hope institutions will see this as a great opportunity to shout about their contributions in this area, as well as celebrating the success of Access to HE more generally.’

The new QAA awards cover three categories: colleges that provide Access to HE courses, universities and colleges that recruit Access to HE students, and Access Validating Agencies (AVAs) - the awarding organisations for the Access to HE Diploma.

The deadline for entries is 12pm on Friday 10 May, and the results will be announced on 30 May. Winners will be presented at the Access to HE conference in Birmingham on 25 June.
